Oil Paint plugin Photoshop CC

A few tips when working with Oil Paint filter

I want to recommend you to convert layer(s) to Smart Object layer from Filter > Convert for Smart Filters. In this way, you can change applied settings at any time plus you can use and experiment with Opacity and blending modes. In case you are working with a larger image of what you need and you are using Smart Object layer then use File > Export > Export As... dialog to downscale image. When using Image > Image Size dialog, applied settings from Oil Paint dialog won't be adjusted to match new dimensions.

Oil Paint options

In this section we will cover options which are available in Oil Paint filter dialog which is available from Filter > Stylize > Oil Paint.

Here are available options which are separated into 2 sections.

Brush

  • Preview checkbox will allow you to preview entire image with the effect applied. You can turn off this option to speed up the process.
  • Stylization is controlling the smoothness of the stroke.
  • Clearness is controlling the length of the stroke.
  • Scale is controlling relief.
  • Bristle Detail is controlling a number of details.

Lighting

  • Angle is controlling the light source of the external light, not brush stroke. It is important to properly set up lighting source when incorporating painting into a larger composition.
  • Shine is controlling lighter details on the painting. Increase this value if you want strong highlights or painting to shine.
